These are a few of my (least) favorite things
1. At the 24 hours Walmart in Hialeah at midnight, all transactions stop in order for the money in the cash registers to be counted and closed out, usually leaving several customers waiting for extended periods of time.
WHY: Transactions must need to be closed out before the end of the day to avoid confusion in income and sales.
2. The Target self-checkout line usually requires assistance from a staff member, thus defeating the purpose of the self-checkout
WHY: The self-checkout machines aren’t prepared for every inconsistency possible and shoppers are generally not aware of the steps needed to be taken in the case of a mistake.
3. The University of Florida requires students with cars to pay $120 a year for a parking decal that can only be used at certain lots on campus.
WHY: Apparently UF just needs more money. The funds collected probably go to the TAPS department for their responsibilities.
4. Apple iPhones begin glitching when a new model is being presented or when a software update is released that is meant to be used with the new model.
WHY: This gives consumers a reason to buy the latest, most expensive model.
5. Men's razors work significantly better than women's razors.
WHY: Men’s razors are meant to work on rough skin and beards making their blades tougher and able to take out more hair.
6. Employees on leave (maternity, sick, etc.) in Miami-Dade County Public Schools must work or use a sick day the week before and/or after Winter Break in order to be paid for Winter Break even though there are no MDCPS employees working during those two weeks.
WHY: Employees would always schedule surgeries and trips in the weeks leading up to Winter Break leaving schools incredibly understaffed.
7. Traffic violations in South Florida are only handled by Police Officers because they are the only ones with the authority to issue a ticket but in the case of a collision, a Public Service Aide (has not gone through the Academy or as much training as the police) is sent with no back up to assign blame (which in turn comes with a ticket).
WHY: Most public service aides are utilized when the department is understaffed or the aides are in need of training.
8. Most CVS Pharmacies are open 24 hours, but the actual pharmacy portion is only open until about 9 PM.
WHY: The licensed pharmacists have more control over their hours because they are in much higher demand than retail employees.
9. When my younger brothers don't listen when I speak or ask them to do something.
WHY: They think I am just playing around or not being serious. They are also more concerned with their shows and games to pay attention to anybody else.
10. When people state the obvious or assume they need to explain a really simple concept.
WHY: People tend to think they’re smarter than everyone else, sometimes their perception of others’ thought process can fool them into thinking they are superior.
11. Finding someone in my unassigned assigned seat or parking space. These things are an unspoken agreement amongst groups, and a betrayal of that agreement is heartbreaking.
WHY: Because the seats/spots are not officially assigned some people decide to sit/park in different places every time without taking into consideration other people
12. When people are unnecessarily loud in Marston.
WHY: People think that because it’s not a traditional library they can have full volume conversations with their study buddies.
13. People that expect you to be available to them 24/7.
WHY: Humans are inherently selfish and always put themselves before others. We think the world revolves around us and think we are the center of everyone’s universe.
14. If my hands are slightly wet, dirty, or greasy or not placed in the perfect position on the home button, my iPhone won't recognize my fingerprint and I'll have to unlock it with the passcode instead.
WHY: In terms of security, if the iPhone can’t read the print properly or there is even a minor difference in the fingerprints it won’t unlock the phone to protect the privacy of its owner.
15. Despite extreme backlash and explicit complaints from consumers, Instagram refuses to remove the current algorithm and go back to showcasing posts in chronological order.
WHY: Because nobody has really stopped using the application even though they are complaining, the CEO’s feel that the algorithm has helped engagement on the app go up.
16. When the plot of an entire book/movie/tv show is based on miscommunication and the entire conflict could be avoided by a single conversation between two characters.
WHY: There is only so fresh ideas in the world, it is very difficult to come up with a completely unique plot, so the easiest way out for writers and producers is miscommunication.
17. Extremely bright ( Xenon or white) headlights. As someone who is incredibly prone to migraines and very sensitive to light, they make driving at night very difficult and unsafe for me.
WHY: Xenon lights have a longer lifetime than halogen lights, they are also more efficient and give the driver much better visibility
18. Apple removing the headphone jack from the design of their latest models, thus not allowing users to listen to music on headphones whilst charging their phones AND rendering all headphones without a lightning adapter useless.
WHY: Their branding is so good that they know people will not stop buying their product, by deconstruction some of the things they had put together they are able to charge people more for more pieces.
19. ATMs that charge ridiculous fees to take out money.
WHY: The ATMs need to be paid for by something, they use the fees to keep them up and running.
20. Places that only accept cash. It's 2019, get with the times and accept my debit card or apple pay.
WHY: It is easier to take money under the table when there is no evidence of a transaction. Many older business owners don’t understand the technology of money transfer via apps.
After looking into all these bugs and actually thinking about the reasoning behind them I am a little less bugged by some and little more bugged by others. Coming up with the original list was a little difficult because I had to put into words the things that annoyed me. I spend a great part of my day annoyed but once I put the disturbance into words I usually realize I was being silly or dramatic. This exercise also really validated a lot of these annoyances for me.
