Failure

1. Story Time

This past semester has been trying to say the least, but I have been on top of my game more so than during other semesters. This has put me in great standing for many of my classes, but it hasn't saved me from screwing up once or twice. I am taking a criminal justice class completely online that requires me to upload creative videos for every module. For one particular module, I went all out and created a very funny yet informative video, that in my mind should have received a perfect score. However, I received the lowest score I had ever received on a video. Why? Because I waited until the last minute to edit it and turn it in and the upload process glitched and a whole minute of the video was just shown as an error, and I was a few seconds over the time limit. Although I understood why the points needed to be taken off for the missing portion, it still saddened me. I was also upset that points were deducted even though I was only 5 seconds over time, and it was clearly because of the more creative parts of the video.

2. What did you learn?

I learned that not everything is in my control. I have to acknowledge that once I have done my best I can only hope for the best, while still understanding that it may not turn out the way I would like. I am a huge believer in yin and yang (finding the good in the bad and understanding that there is sometimes bad in the good), and this semester's experience has really let me see that. I have done well over-all, but not without the presence of occasional bad moments or assignments that slip my mind.

3. Reflect.

Failure is a part of life. If you never fail, you'll never be forced to learn to improve. A single strategy is not going to work in every situation, you often have to switch it up in order to be successful. Failure, just as success, is different in everyone's eyes. To some getting a C in a class is a win, while to others it is just as bad as an F.

  1. Jessica,
I definitely understand why it upset you when you didn’t do well on your criminal justice video assignment, it can feel defeating to do bad on an assignment you feel you should’ve done well on. I can relate to this with my accounting class exams, I feel like I understand the material and feel confident during the exam, but when I get the grade back it’s definitely trying.

  2. Jessica,

Great post! I definitely know the feeling of thinking you did super well on an assignment but then receiving a grade that completely shocks you. I liked how you mentioned that everything is not in our control. Students often blame themselves for not earning a specific grade in the class and tend to put more pressure to do better. At times, we have to just accept reality and move on.
